That is why we are absolutely thrilled to announce the official launch of the second phase of Bamagreen in Mali. This is a pioneering circular economy project in West Africa that we co-lead alongside our allies at adaPETation (IMG Group), with strategic funding from the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID). With this initiative, we are proving on the ground that it is entirely possible to clean up our environment while building a much stronger, more resilient, and fairer social fabric alongside vulnerable and displaced communities in Bamako and the Ségou region. Innovative Technology from IMG Group The heart of this project beats thanks to an advanced recycling technology adapted to the local context provided by IMG Group, who already bring the incredible experience of having recycled over 200,000 tons of plastic in Portugal. Through their global initiative Plastic2Prosperity, we are implementing semi-industrial machinery and scalable modular systems in Mali capable of processing up to 80 tons of plastic per month. What is truly revolutionary is that we don't just stop at cleaning up: we close the loop entirely by transforming that plastic waste into high-quality, standardized materials for construction and electrification, as well as recycled flakes that are reintroduced directly into the value chain. This not only drastically reduces local pollution and the carbon footprint but also decreases the country's reliance on imports. Social and Environmental Impact in Bamako The real magic of Bamagreen lies in its development approach for women and youth in the peri-urban areas of Bamako. They become the true protagonists and drivers of change. We have set highly ambitious goals for this year: we expect to recover over 960 tons of plastic waste per year, create 150 direct green jobs, and train 150 people in recycling techniques and circular production. Furthermore, because caring for the land is holistic, we are pairing all this activity with tree planting—setting a goal of 50,000 trees to bring life back to the environment. This will achieve a direct positive impact on the lives of 8,500 people and an indirect impact on more than 28,300 local residents. As Marta Tietz Laranjinha, our Regional Director for Africa at Ayuda en Acción, highlights: "Bamagreen Phase II demonstrates that it is possible to turn an environmental challenge into an opportunity, boosting decent employment, strengthening local capacities, and generating sustainable solutions led by the communities themselves—especially women and youth. Thanks to the support of AECID, we are building a circular economy model with the potential to be replicated in other African territories." Multi-Stakeholder Strategy and Sustainable Development Goals For a transformation like this to last, Ayuda en Acción is committed to a multi-stakeholder approach that integrates civil society organizations, the private sector, social enterprises, local authorities, and state technical services. We are organized through a very clear sequence of results: Strengthening the entire recycling chain (from collection to commercialization). Creating technical training opportunities and green jobs. Advancing parallel efforts in reforestation and environmental awareness. Fostering local innovation and knowledge management so the community can become autonomous. This entire effort is firmly aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), directly impacting targets for waste reduction and reuse (SDG 12), climate action in policy and education (SDG 13), youth employment and productive inclusion (SDG 8 and SDG 4), as well as gender equality and the meaningful participation of women (SDG 5 and SDG 10). With Bamagreen, we are proving that another form of sustainable development is possible: one where we care for the planet without leaving anyone behind."> adaPETation (IMG Group), with strategic funding from the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).
