They are valued not only for their income-generating potential, but also for their rich nutritional benefits. These fruits are an important part of the rural diet, providing essential vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats that help combat malnutrition in many communities.

The Wolaita region in southern Ethiopia has a favorable climate that has supported avocado cultivation for decades, mainly with local varieties. However, these traditional varieties often take many years to bear fruit and generally produce lower yields. This has limited farmers' ability to significantly improve their livelihoods.

Many smallholder farmers in the region face challenges such as poor seedling quality, limited access to training, and difficulties in accessing profitable markets.

Green Gold Project: an alternative with avocado and mango

To solve these problems, Ayuda en Acción has launched the Green Gold Project in Wolaita. Through this project, hybrid varieties of avocado and mango are being introduced in Ethiopia. But we are not stopping there: we are also providing training in climate-smart agricultural practices.

What began as a small project has become an important force for improving food security, income, and resilience to climate crises in the Wolaita region.

The project focuses on the districts of Boloso Sore, Boloso Bombe, and Damot Woyde, where it supports 5,000 smallholder farmers, indirectly benefiting some 25,000 people.

Through Gold Green Project, we work closely with local farmer organizations, seedling producers, exporters, agro-processors, and training centers to strengthen the entire production and marketing chain.

Hybrid avocado and mango trees in Ethiopia: what are the benefits?

Hybrid avocado and mango fruit trees offer several advantages:

1. They ripen faster.

2. They produce more fruit.

3. They are more resistant to pests, diseases, and drought.

From a nutritional point of view, hybrid mangoes provide high levels of vitamins A and C, which are essential for immune health, skin repair, and child growth and development. Hybrid avocados, meanwhile, are packed with heart-healthy fats, fiber, potassium, and folic acid, which promote cardiovascular health, digestion, and brain function. By adopting these improved varieties, farmers not only earn more, but also improve the quality of the food their families consume.

Testimonials from avocado farmers

Workinesh Kaficho, a mother of four from Kindo Koysha, has firsthand knowledge of this transformation based on avocado and mango hybridization in Ethiopia. She recalls how her family struggled with food shortages and malnutrition before joining the project.

After receiving hybrid avocado and mango seedlings, as well as training in climate-smart agriculture, her garden began producing fruit in just 18 months. Today, with what she earns from her harvest, she can better feed her family, pay for her children's education, and reinvest in her farm.

Inspired by his wife's success, her husband invested 22,000 birr (136 euros) in the purchase of an ox to increase the farm's productivity, even though he was not directly involved in the project: “Now there is always food on our table. People come to learn from our experience,” he says proudly.

An important factor in the project's success has been access to quality planting materials and modern agricultural tools. The demonstration plots, which are part of a model farmer approach, showcase best practices.

The project has also introduced grafting, a technique that rejuvenates older avocado trees and significantly reduces the time it takes for them to bear fruit.

In collaboration with the Areka Agricultural Research Center and Selam Seedling Enterprise, the project has rehabilitated 1,500 avocado trees with a success rate of 75%. Now, thanks to the Ayuda en Acción project, they are regaining their dignity in the form of rights and opportunities for the present and the future.

Menstruation in rural Ethiopia: a reason for not moving forward

In rural Ethiopia, menstruation is not just a physical experience. It is often a reason for shame, silence, and missed opportunities.

In many communities in Wolaita, girls who menstruate are still considered impure. They are often excluded from daily life, forbidden from cooking, serving food, or even attending school. Some are forced to stay home for days, missing valuable class time and falling behind their male classmates. In addition, the sudden onset of menstruation at school can mean humiliation, ridicule, or harassment. For some, even this natural event can mean their last day in the classroom.

For a long time, girls have depended on pieces of cloth to manage their periods, an unsafe and uncomfortable practice rooted in tradition. Ayuda en Acción is changing this situation through projects that strengthen schools with training, infrastructure, latrine construction, and educational awareness.

Reusable pads and education

In 2023, in collaboration with the MELA for Her organization (meaning “solution for her”), hygiene kits including reusable pads, soap, and menstrual health education were provided to nine schools in Wolaita.

Beyond supplies, girls' clubs were created to provide safe spaces where girls can learn, share, and support each other openly, helping to break the cycle of silence and shame.

It is important to note that reusable sanitary pads in Ethiopia can cost around 150 birr per set (almost one euro), so in many households they are still considered a luxury item. This economic barrier means that many girls cannot afford adequate menstrual hygiene products without assistance, highlighting the critical role of projects like this in improving access and changing social perceptions.

For now, the program is limited to nine schools, but the need and demand are growing. Expansion to more schools in the region will depend on future funding. Because this is not just about hygiene: it is about breaking the silence, about rewriting what it means to be a girl in rural Ethiopia. Technical staff from the Ministry of Agriculture of Ethiopia, FAO-Ethiopia, the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and representatives of the non-governmental organisations Rescate and Amigos de Silva participated in the training.

The training combined theoretical modules with practical exercises, oriented towards systemic market analysis and the design of catalytic interventions that promote sustainable, inclusive and scalable systemic change. The MSD conceptual framework was applied to diagnose market functions performing below their potential. A mapping of relevant actors was also carried out and different systemic constraints that limit the capacity of systems to provide goods and services in a sustainable way to the most vulnerable populations were analysed.

During the days of the meeting, work was also done on the formulation of results chains, a fundamental tool for planning, monitoring and impact evaluation. Throughout the process, gender, protection and climate resilience approaches were mainstreamed, ensuring that the design of interventions responds to the multiple dimensions of exclusion and vulnerability that affect vulnerable populations, especially women and youth.

Reflection on the future of projects

One of the differentiating aspects of the approach was the reflection on sustainability after an intervention: which actors in the system will assume key functions? what will be their incentives to continue doing so? who will finance the required services once the support we provide ends? These questions allow us to align actions with the principles of sustainability, replicability and scale.

The training was carried out within the framework of a delegated cooperation project of the European Union, managed by AECID's Overseas Cooperation Office (OCE) in Ethiopia. This was the first experience of ISD training provided by Ayuda en Acción for actors outside the organisation. The aim is to consolidate a continuous process of capacity building that promotes the appropriation of the ISD approach by local actors.

According to Eduardo Reneses, head of the sectoral area, ‘with this type of training we reaffirm our commitment to the Inclusive Systems Development approach as a strategic framework for designing and implementing sustainable development interventions’. ‘We understand our role as facilitators of systemic change, promoting capacities, incentives and relationships between local actors to improve the functionality of the system beyond our direct intervention’.

This type of initiative not only strengthens individual and institutional capacities, but also fosters the construction of strategic alliances, shared learning and the convergence of visions oriented towards systemic and long-term impact.

Ayuda en Acción in Ethiopia, in collaboration with People in Need and Development Expertise Center (DEC), announces the launch of a transformative three-year project titled "Empowering futures for youth and women beyond agriculture".

This initiative, funded by the European Commission, aims to enhance economic resilience and create sustainable opportunities for women and young people across Ethiopia’s Afar, Tigray, and Oromia regions.

Direct support and economic resilience

Through this project, 16,500 women and youth will receive direct support to improve their access to demand-driven, marketable skills and financial resources.

It has also trained rural youth in agriculture and entrepreneurship, equipping them with valuable skills to create their own livelihoods.

Beyond production, the project strengthens the entire avocado and mango value chain in Ethiopia. By bringing together producers, exporters, government officials, and financial institutions, multi-stakeholder platforms foster cooperation on issues such as agricultural financing, pricing, and sustainable market development.

“Before, I was just struggling to survive.

His visit underscored Spain’s dedication to supporting initiatives that enhance resilience, climate adaptation, gender equality, and humanitarian efforts, contributing to Ethiopia's broader development agenda.

Strengthening resilience and empowering communities

Ayuda en Acción Ethiopia, with financial support from AECID, is implementing transformative programs aimed at building resilience, promoting climate adaptation, facilitating anticipatory action, and providing digital solutions for agro-pastoralist communities. Additionally, the organization focuses on empowering women economically, ensuring they have access to resources and opportunities for sustainable livelihoods. These efforts have already reached thousands of beneficiaries across different regions, significantly improving their living conditions and future prospects.

Beyond its collaboration with Ayuda en Acción, AECID is actively working with other sectors and organizations in Ethiopia to drive long-term development. Spanish Cooperation is investing in critical areas such as healthcare, gender equality, climate resilience, and humanitarian programs. These efforts include support for the health sector, poverty alleviation, education, and youth empowerment, addressing both immediate needs and structural challenges.

High-level meetings and strategic partnerships

During his visit, Antón Leis has held high-level meetings with key Ethiopian stakeholders. He met with representatives from the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs to strengthen ongoing collaborations and explore new opportunities for joint initiatives. Additionally, he held a conversation with the President of the Somali Region, emphasizing the importance of regional cooperation in tackling socio-economic challenges.

Dounia Sadaoui, Ayuda en Acción’s Country Director in Ethiopia, played a crucial role in highlighting the organization’s strategic focus. She emphasized the importance of localization, the triple nexus approach (linking humanitarian aid, development, and peacebuilding), gender inclusion, and innovation as fundamental pillars of Spanish NGOs’ contributions in the region. These principles guide Ayuda en Acción’s efforts to create sustainable impact and drive positive change in Ethiopian communities.

Commitment to humanitarian support and refugee resilience

As part of the visit, the delegation also met with regional leaders and refugee officials to reinforce ongoing resilience-building efforts and support displaced populations. The meetings centered on enhancing humanitarian interventions, strengthening community-based solutions, and ensuring that vulnerable groups receive the necessary assistance to rebuild their lives.
García
