Ayuda en Acción works to strengthen partnerships that promote sustainable development and social transformation in different regions, including Latin America. The relationship between the European Union and Latin America has been key in international cooperation, with a long history of trade, development programs and joint strategies to address global challenges. In an international context defined by the Trump administration's new policy on development cooperation and foreign policy in general, we at Ayuda en Acción believe it is important to strengthen collaboration between the two regions to face common challenges and promote the well-being of both societies, with a special focus on children and young people.
Just a few days ago, the Chairman of Ayuda en Acción published an op-ed in Devex in which he analyses the situation in detail. In his article "How strengthening an EU-Latin America partnership is a win-win", Dezcallar shares the urgent need to strengthen collaboration between the European Union and Latin America, underlining how these efforts can benefit both regions. He argues that deepening this partnership is not only a diplomatic imperative, but also an opportunity to promote economic growth, social cohesion and environmental sustainability: “Now more than ever, the EU must seize the opportunity to strengthen its partnership with Latin America, ensuring it is both resilient and sustainable”.
Innovation to tackle common problems
Dezcallar points out that Latin America and the EU share crucial challenges, such as climate change, inequality and digital transformation. He believes that closer cooperation between the two regions would make it possible to find innovative and effective solutions to these common problems.
In addition, he highlights the importance of strengthening trade relations and investment flows, arguing that this would not only benefit the economies of both regions, but would also increase their resilience to future crises: “The EU should also focus on maximizing synergies between the public and private sectors. By linking development cooperation with market-based strategies, both regions can create a mutually beneficial dynamic that fosters economic growth while advancing the Sustainable Development Goals”.
At Ayuda en Acción, we emphasize the need for the partnership proposed by Dezcallar in his article to have an inclusive focus, prioritizing marginalized communities and promoting policies that ensure that no one is left behind in the processes of development and international cooperation.
