Ayuda en Acción is releasing a new episode of the docuseries: The Opportunity. In this episode, we focus on Ethiopia, spending eight minutes discussing socioeconomic inclusion and how supporting people at key moments in their lives—childhood, adolescence, and youth—is essential for building a future with real opportunities.
The beginning: the first step toward something big
The journey begins with Misganu, who at eight years old is already teaching us that change starts in the classroom. In an area where eating well every day remains a huge challenge for many children, his story shows us that a school is much more than a building: it is the place where everything begins.
Thanks to the school we built, Misganu is now studying, but the best thing is that the change doesn't stop with him. His mother has joined savings groups and set up her own local business, taking control of the family finances. This ensures that her children never go without a meal or a book in their backpack.
Consolidation: rootedness versus migration
Halfway through, we meet Serkalem, a 14-year-old teenager whose story best reflects what the sponsorship program means. After seven years of sustained support, her family has achieved a stability that was previously unthinkable. Thanks to economic support and agricultural training, they have achieved the most important thing: staying together and ensuring that none of the siblings have to leave home to make a living. Today, Serkalem dreams of becoming a doctor, a goal that now feels within reach thanks to a community that has seen its schools and health centers come back to life.
The future: climate resilience and female empowerment
The video ends on a high note with Abezash, who at 22 years old is proof that long-term support pays off. Not only is she studying at university, but she also works the land alongside her mother. They have turned to moringa, a plant that is truly “magical” in the fight against climate change because it “can withstand anything” and is also a superfood for the entire community. Abezash represents a new generation of Ethiopian women who are transforming their environment, taking control of their economy and becoming the driving force behind their entire región.
