Ayuda en Acción took part in the event “Alianza Shire: ten years of experience in access to energy in humanitarian contexts. Challenges and opportunities”, hosted by Alianza Shire, of which Ayuda en Acción is a member. This meeting, in which representatives of member organizations have participated, as well as Ethiopian entities that have participated in the project and relevant agents in the humanitarian, innovation and climate change fields. It was held in the auditorium of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) in Madrid and was attended by Pauline Cyiza, Regional Advisor for Energy and Markets at Ayuda en Acción Uganda.
Objectives of the event and of the Alianza Shire
The event takes place after the conclusion of an energy access project carried out by the Alianza in the refugee camps and host communities in Dollo Ado, Ethiopia, a country in which Ayuda en Acción also works.
According to the Alianza, “the event is not only an opportunity to share the results, impact and lessons learned from the collaborative work of recent years, but also a space to reflect on partnerships and access to energy in humanitarian action in a global context of climate change and increasing populations on the move”.
The Alianza Shire, created in 2013, is a collaborative platform that brings together entities from the public, private and academic sectors. Its objective is to develop sustainable energy solutions for vulnerable populations in humanitarian contexts.
The purpose of the event was to share results, impacts and lessons learned from the collaboration between the members of the Alianza Shire in recent years. It also aims to reflect on partnerships and access to energy in the field of humanitarian action in a global context of climate change and increasing mobile populations.
Ayuda en Acción's participation in this event underlines its commitment to improving access to renewable energy in humanitarian contexts and its collaboration with key actors at the international level.
The event was held in person but can later be viewed on the AECID YouTube channel. More information and program here.
Featured projects
At Ayuda en Acción, we have several projects in which we work to promote sustainable and affordable renewable energy for the most disadvantaged populations. An example of this is the PURE Project (Productive Uses of Renewable Energy) in Uganda, which serves the migrant population from South Sudan in Adjumani as well as local host communities. The project focuses on improving the use of and access to solar irrigation systems for agricultural production, promoting modern and clean alternatives for cooking, and developing off-grid cooling and drying solutions in specific agricultural value chains.
